Lanzarote is a small island, so depending on the wind and wave conditions, its a short 30 minute ride to the other side to check out the surf. The North West area of Famara and La Santa has the most consistent surf spots and get waves from West and North swells. The North East area around Arrieta is less consistent, but when the waves are big from the North swells, the waves filter in a bit smaller and more perfect.
Like in Hawaii, localism here is fierce. Specially in the reef surf spots where the wave breaks only in one place. But on the sand beaches, where the waves break everywhere, there is plenty of waves for everyone. If you surf with respect and humility then localism is not a problem. Surfers here also like to travel and like making friends with surfers from other places. Respect the ocean and respect the surfers and you will make lots of friends that will take you to secret spots. But if you try to surf a reef spot and you are not in physical and mental shape to be there, you are dangerous to yourself and everyone in the water and you will get screamed out of the water and maybe even get a Hawaiian punch. The reef surf spots are full of sea urchins, sharp lava, and dangerous currents. Surfing under such extreme conditions is a life and death situation where already a few have died. Wave hogs and snakes also get kicked out of the water. So remember: respect da locals; there is always going to be another wave. Forgiveness and gratitud is the key to great friendships.

Surfing lava reefs is very dangerous and for experienced surfers only.
Famara beach break is fun for all levels of surfing.

Localism is fierce in the reef breaks. Specially when is crowded.
The water is crystal clear because there is no river run offs since it almost never rains.
